His father was a fireman and mace bearer on the day President John FitzGerald Kennedy visited, and Gerry was (aged 15) a pipe major in the Sexton St Pipe Band that played as part of the visit. This interview is recorded at Gerry’s home in Limerick city. He discusss his own memories of the day, and how proud he was of his father’s role in the events. He still has a copy of the front page of the Limerick Chronicle newspaper, picturing the events and his father meeting the President (shown on video).
